If you drive a modern car like a Honda City, Toyota Vios, Perodua Myvi (new generation), or Proton Iriz, chances are you are driving with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).
CVTs are excellent for fuel efficiency and smooth driving, but they are known to be more "sensitive" compared to traditional automatic gearboxes (4AT). If not cared for properly, repair costs can reach thousands of Ringgit!
As Gearbox Specialists at Advance Auto Work with over 15 years of experience, we want to share 6 Golden Rules to ensure your CVT lasts as long as possible.
1. Warm Up Your Engine Before Driving
Don't just shift into gear and drive off immediately, especially in the morning.
- Why? Let the engine run for 1-2 minutes. This allows the CVT fluid to circulate throughout the system and reach the correct operating temperature. Cold, thick fluid cannot protect the metal components optimally.
2. The Golden Rule: Complete Stop Before Shifting!
This is the most common mistake drivers make. Never shift from 'D' to 'R' or 'R' to 'D' while the car is still moving.
- The Consequence: This action puts extreme stress on the steel belt and pulleys inside the CVT. Over time, this causes the belt to slip or snap.
3. Avoid Aggressive Driving (Especially at Start-up)
CVTs are designed for smooth, consistent driving, not for drag racing.
- The Right Way: Avoid "flooring" the gas pedal (sudden hard acceleration) from a standstill. Let the car build speed progressively. Sudden braking should also be avoided if possible.
4. Follow a Strict Fluid Change Schedule
Don't wait until the manual says 40,000km or 80,000km. Malaysia's hot weather and heavy traffic are considered "Severe Driving Conditions."
- Our Expert Recommendation: Change your CVT fluid every 20,000km - 30,000km (especially if the warranty has ended).
- Important: Don't wait until you feel 'slipping' or hear a whining noise. By then, it might be too late!
5. Maintain the Oil Cooler
Many drivers overlook this component. The oil cooler stabilizes the transmission temperature. Heat is the #1 enemy of a CVT.
- Our Recommendation: Replace the oil cooler every 100,000km to 120,000km. If the cooler is clogged or leaks, the gearbox will overheat, causing internal components to melt or fail.
6. Don't Forget the Auto Filter!
Changing the fluid alone is not enough if the filter is dirty.
- Our Recommendation: Replace the Auto Filter every 40,000km - 50,000km. A clogged filter restricts oil pressure, leading to rough shifting and damage.
Conclusion: Prevention is Better Than Cure
Practicing these 6 tips can significantly extend the lifespan of your CVT gearbox. However, if you are already feeling a jerk or hearing a hum, get professional help immediately.
